Welcome Ideas is a US based 501(c)(3) Non-Profit Corporation, operating in Zanzibar, Tanzania as a registered Non-Governmental Organization (NGO). Through education, support, networking, and pop-up facilities, Welcome Ideas helps members of the local Zanzibar community develop, finance, and operate their own tourism related businesses. By encouraging and enabling entrepreneurship in the tourism sector, Welcome Ideas hopes to reduce the economic leakage associated with tourism in Zanzibar, allowing the tourism economy to better benefit the local communities. Our programs and recruitment efforts are targeted at the economically disadvantaged, the youth, and the women of Zanzibar, individuals often left out of the tourism sector on the island.

The archipelago of Zanzibar is a semi-autonomous state off the coast of Tanzania. While it is known for its’ pristine beaches, beach tourism is just one of many offerings that arriving tourists to Zanzibar can enjoy. Located in the capital of Zanzibar, Stone Town offers tourists the opportunity to get lost in ancient alleyways within the UNESCO World Heritage Site. Recreational enthusiasts enjoy the world renowned kite surfing found in Paje and diving in Nungwi. Tourist can also experience the wonderful beauty of the marine protected area of Chumbe Island or see the world’s only Red Colobus Monkeys in Jozani Forest.

Despite the wealth of tourism options that Zanzibar has to offer, the local population sees very little direct, indirect, or induced economic impact from tourism. Non-Zanzibari investors continue to own most tourism related businesses on the island and tourism businesses often do not hire from the local community. The variety of tourism business opportunities and the high level of economic leakage from tourism makes Zanzibar the ideal geographic location to open the first Welcome Ideas Tourism Development Incubator.

Although the services of Welcome Ideas are available to all local residents, programs are designed specifically to address the needs of young adults (ages 15 - 34), women, and the economically disadvantaged. Admissions and recruitment efforts will specifically target these particularly vulnerable communities.

Low Incomes

Markdown Header

Text Transform active
Although prices in Zanzibar for hotels and other tourism services are often comprable with those of hotels and services around the world, the wages earned by employees in the tourism sector are not comprable to those of their western counterparts. Often times the income generated through the tourism sector does not make it down to the employees. Through helping Zanzibaris set up their own small responsible tourism businesses, we can help more of the revenue generated from tourism get into the pockets of those providing the tourism services to guests.

Gender Inequality

Markdown Header

Text Transform active
Unfortunately there is a stigma associated with tourism work in Zanzibar, especially for women. Although tourism work often pays more than other employment opportunities, the stigma associated with it can force women into lower paying professions. One of our goals is to help women start their own small tourism businesses, creating more opportunities for women in the sector, reducing the gender imbalance in tourism, and reducing the stigma of women in tourism by developing and supporting positive, successful female small tourism business entrepreneurs and role models.

Difficult Livelihoods

Markdown Header

Text Transform active
While most tourism employees find it difficult to pay for their children's education, many tourism employees also work and live across the island from their children. Since they can not afford to send their children to the good schools near their places of employment while they are at work, they have their children live with other family members in places where they can better afford a good education and care for their children. Through helping Zanzibaris develop their own small tourism businesses, we hope to develop better livelihoods for those working in the tourism sector.
